Happy Birthday Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962)
“She listens, wants, cares. I catch her laughing across a room and I bust up. Every pore of that lovely translucent skin is alive, open every moment - even though this world could make her vulnerable to being hurt. I would rather work with her than any other actress. I adore her.”
- Montgomery Clift
Norma Jeane Baker aka Marilyn Monroe| June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962
I’ve never fooled anyone. I’ve let people fool themselves. They didn’t bother to find out who and what I was. Instead they would invent a character for me. I wouldn’t argue with them. They were obviously loving somebody I wasn’t.
Happy Birthday Marilyn!

Liz photographed on the set of The Sandpiper by Richard Avedon. It’s mindboggling to me how the Avedon state hasn’t payed ANY attention to these set of pictures, which are quite numerous. Not only was Liz at the peak of her beauty in them but they are also some of Avedon’s best work, technically speaking, with a masterful dominion of natural light. For some reason they’ve been forgotten by everyone.
As a side note, do you notice the lilac spots on Liz’s eyes? These purple “eye freckles” combined with the deep blue of her eyes is what made her eyes look “Violet”. Unique eyes, for the ages.

Aww…“Very important to read before the surgery. Dear Doctor, cut the less possible. It can seem unimportant I know but it’s not about that - the fact that I’m a woman is important and means a lot to me. Please save what you can save, I’m in your hands. You have children and you must know what it means - please Doctor - I think you’ll understand! thanks- for God’s sake dear Doctor don’t remove the ovaries- I beg you once again to do your best to limit the scars- I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Marilyn Monroe”.
The Great George Hurrell literally changed the face of Hollywood with his portraits that transformed mortal actors into celluloid Gods and Goddessess, with pictures that were printed everywhere around the world, and creating lasting Iconographies that defined generations in the amount of time it took for someone to gaze upon them in a glossy and be mystified by them, in a matter of seconds.
And it all began with this portrait done in his first sitting with a celebrity, a striking image of Ramon Novarro, styled as The New Orpheus, The Charmer in Ancient Greece, capable of charming every living creature and who died at the hands of those who could not hear his divine music. Not unlike the real Ramon Novarro.
